Kid, I like your style. When you get out of here, look up Big Jim Colosimo. I know you can't tell by looking at me now, but I used to be pretty important to him. Tell him I said I thought he could use a smart kid like you. He owes me a favor or two, so he may take you in.

Kerry had never actually met Big Jim Colosimo, but he knew who he was. He controlled rackets in Chicago, including prostitution and gambling. If Colosimo would take him on, Kerry figured he'd have it made.

When the two orderlies came for Kerry that afternoon, they were wearing masks and gloves. It was obvious the sputum had tested positive. Kerry had a hard time keeping the smile off his face, for what was a death sentence for most was his ticket out.

Kerry made himself wait one full day before he went over the wall, and leaving was so easy that the escape itself was anticlimactic. The tubercular ward was on the west side of the building, on the third floor overlooking North LaSalle Avenue. There were no bars or restraining screens on the windows, so Kerry simply crawled out onto the ledge, worked his way to the corner of the building, climbed down the drain spout, and walked away.

He waited a couple of weeks before he went to see Colosimo. In that time his color began to clear up, and he regained some of the weight he had lost. Stepping into Colosimo's Café at 2126 South Wabash Avenue and looking up at the gold-and-crystal chandeliers, Kerry had the strong feeling that he was looking into his future. No more petty thievery for him. Kerry O'Braugh was heading for the big time.
